Okuma named the bird Peep, and Peep lived with the Okumas for the next 26 years, eventually passing away in 2010. She has only fond memories of Peep and his big personality. “He had free rein of the house,” Okuma says. “If you left your wallet open, he would pull out all of the money and bring it back to his cage. Once, I went into my grandma’s room, and all of her money and her cigarettes were gone. He loved his cigarettes!”
The artist got the idea to bead shoes in Peep’s honor last year, when she was commissioned to create a work for the Hood Museum in Hanover, New Hampshire. Okuma took a pair of Casadei boots, covered them in buckskin, then beaded images of Peep on top—a painstaking process that took several months. The boots will be on display at the museum in a 2022 exhibit exploring American artists’s relationship with the natural world. “It’s the first time that we’re putting our Native American and American collections together,” says Jami Powell, the museum’s associate curator of Native American art.
Renowned Luiseño and Shoshone-Bannock beadwork artist and designer Jamie Okuma is an expert at putting an Indigenous twist on luxury fashion. Okuma will take sky-high heels from labels like Christian Louboutin and add beads by hand to create colorful prints that reflect her tribes’ unique designs. Her pieces have been featured in countless museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian. The artist’s latest beaded footwear, however, serves as her most personal project yet. She hand-beaded a pair of boots in honor of her unlikely childhood pet: a wild bird with a penchant for piano music, cash, and cigarettes.
